Are You Engaged In Trivialities?
Very often in life, a lot of people instead of dealing with the pivotal issues their lives hinge on and identifying their motives in every action they are seen dealing with trivialities. They ignore the essentials and go after the nonessentials and they eventually miss out of the beauty of true achievement.
A case study is found in the story of the scriptural account below:
And it came to pass, when the Lord would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for the Lord hath sent me to Beth-el. And Elisha said unto him, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Beth-el. And the sons of the prophets that were at Beth-el came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Lord will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said, Yea, I know it ; hold ye your peace. And Elijah said unto him, Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee; for the Lord hath sent me to Jericho. And he said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to Jericho. And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Lord will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he answered, Yea, I know it ; hold ye your peace. And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the Lord hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on. And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan. And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground. And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me. And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless , if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so. And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it , and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces. He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan; And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over. And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him”. 2 Kings 2:1-15 KJV
While Elisha was engrossed in the desire to be endowed with the double portion, the rest of the sons of the prophets were busying themselves with trivialities of teasing him of The master being taken away.
Elisha knew what he needed and he was all out for it no matter the cost. He was after the double portion. The sons of the prophet were in the business of showing up that they could see and that they could prophesy seeing things that are not easily revealed to the ordinary man. They were engrossed in their pride, “we are the seers”.
They actually saw that Elijah was going to be taken away. That was great. But while they were carried away with the issue of the Master being taken away, Elisha’s interest was in the mantle that was going to be released on him.
We will see the difference between who sees Elijah being taken away as they went towards Jericho and the man who returns from Jericho with the mantle. The seers eventually became the one bowing at the feet of Elisha.
You must know what you really want, be committed to it, be consistent with it and do not let any one distract you or get you discouraged. Be focused on the goal. Pursue it vigorously for he that put forth his hand on the plow and looks back is not fit for the kingdom.
The kingdom is for men and women of focus whose eyes are singled. It is not the man that talks about the future that matters but the man that holds the future. And Elisha said in his heart, I know why I am here.
The future that the sons of the prophet were talking about was what Elisha was all out for and he got it. The sons of the prophet knew what was going to happen but they did not know how to take advantage of it.
I chose to be among those who take hold on their future like Elisha than to be among the sons of the prophets who merely saw the vision of Elijah being taken away but could not see what he was going to take away and how to plunge into it. The taking of the master they all talked about was not just about Elijah but the mantle.
Isreal was about to lose something very vital to her future and existence: the mantle vis-à-vis the double portion. Just as the covenant of God with Abraham was transfer from one generation to another: from Abraham to Isaac and from Isaac to Jacob. So was this anointing and divine endowment expected to be transferred from Elijah to Elisha. It could have gone into oblivion if Elisha was not disciplined and focused about his pursuit while the rest of the sons of the prophets were engaged in the show of shame.
Dealing With Trivialities.
They were concerned with the peripheral and denied themselves of the substance, “the double portion” that was inherent in the mantle. They saw the future of others but were ignorant of their own utmost deficiency.
They eventually became errand boys for the man with the mantle. They began to send themselves on irrelevant errands. They were looking for Elijah that had been taken away on the chariot of heaven but they could not see that. However, Elisha knew what really transpired. There is a transfer of grace from the master to the servant. And now the servant has become and transformed into a Master.
And they said unto him, Behold now, there be with thy servants fifty strong men; let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy master: lest peradventure the Spirit of the Lord hath taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley. And he said, Ye shall not send. And when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, Send. They sent therefore fifty men; and they sought three days, but found him not. And when they came again to him, (for he tarried at Jericho,) he said unto them, Did I not say unto you, Go not?” 2 Kings 2:16-18 KJV
What are your motivations? What are the things that excite you and keep you going? Is it the Shadow or the Substance?
Watch your motives.
Motives are the driving force of actions. You cannot severe people’s actions from their actions. There is always a motive behind every action. It will tell what you will eventually become and it is the measure and estimation of how far you can go in life. It is apparently what sets the limits in your life. Do not be carried away by trivialities. Go for the gold.
To your success. See you at the top!
